Tawana joined Skuld in 2017 and is the Managing Director of Skuld Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association (Bermuda) Ltd, ‘Skuld Bermuda’.
Skuld is one of the world’s leading marine insurers, with P&I mutual insurance comprising Skuld’s biggest line of business. In her role as Managing Director, Tawana is responsible for the management of the underwriting, financial reporting, legal and compliance functions within Skuld Mutual, Skuld Re and Skuld Holdings.
Tawana has also served on the Board of Directors of Hydra Insurance Company Ltd, (the captive reinsurance company for the 12 clubs comprising the International Group of P&I Clubs), since 2018, as Chair of the Audit Committee and as a member of their Reserving Committee and now as Chair of the Consultation Working Group. Tawana, formerly Vice-President of Hydra, was voted into the role of President of Hydra’s Board of Directors in May 2023.
Prior to joining Skuld, Tawana was at Bowring Marsh (Bermuda) Ltd, for five years and held the role of Vice President, of Claims and Compliance. She was also a founding member of CLM Bermuda (Claims and Litigation Management Alliance Bermuda), on the executive of the Bermuda CPCU Society and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Before entering the insurance industry, she worked for many years in the Criminal Justice system and was a Crown Counsel in the Ministry of Justice.
Tawana, a Barrister is called to the Bar of England and Wales and to the Bermuda Bar, and in addition to her career in international business, is passionate about Human Rights and is the past Chairperson of the Bermuda Human Rights Commission. There she presided over discrimination cases, delivering landmark judgements that were incorporated by Parliament into Bermuda law and established precedents outlining the responsibility of employers in cases of workplace harassment and discrimination.
Tawana has held a number of advisory and board positions and continues to be active in international business and community initiatives and most notably serves on the Executive of ABIC (Association of Bermuda International Companies) as a Deputy Chairperson, and on the Board of Governors of her alma mater, Warwick Academy.
In 2017 Tawana was voted ‘‘One of the Most Ten Fascinating People In Bermuda’.
